PUNT : PUNT IN WINE BOTTLES ! UNDERIVED HISTORY !

PUNT:

PUNT in wine bottles ! why ?

A dimple in the bottom of a wine bottle is known as a 'punt'. There have been numerous reasons offered explaining how the use of punts came about:

A punt makes it easier to hold a wine bottle - as well as pour from it - with one hand: One holds the wine bottle from the base, placing the thumb into the middle of the punt, and firmly gripping the back side of the bottle with the remaining four fingers.

Punts add style and flair to a bottle's design. The punt adds a sleek rounded shape to the overall composition of the bottle.

Recycled wine bottle glasses, also known as a wine punt, are simply a wine bottle converted into a drinking glass.

Is the punt of a wine bottle related to quality?

"A punt, also known as a kick-up, refers to the dimple at the bottom of a wine bottle. There is no consensus explanation for its purpose." That's Wikipedia description of what a punt is.

I've seen that the deeper the punt, the more expensive the wine is (and usually, better quality). I'm not sure if this is related somehow, though. If it's related, is it only for aesthetical purposes? What would happen if you store a great wine both in a flat-bottom bottle and in a deep-punt one? Will the aging and the taste vary because of this?

Before wine went commercial and was home-made in small productions, did they get to decide on the punt of the bottle?
